Summer Camps 2020
Camp is Going to be Different This Year
But one thing will be the same. Kids still need safe adults to protect them from child sexual abuse. As our social distancing time stretches on, people are becoming aware of the risk to children who may be confined with an abuser. For some children, school, recreation and social activities in the community provide safety. Without access to these programs, children who are experiencing sexual abuse at home are in danger of experiencing increased abuse.
Camp saved my life So Many Kids
Camp Community is Family
So many extraordinary leaders emerge from camp communities. Camp is a place where kids are celebrated. Camp is a place where growth and development are nurtured, encouraged and supported. Camp staff spend their summers providing amazing child-centred opportunities to the young people who join them onsite for a week, two weeks, a month and sometimes for a whole summer. Camp staff become the most important people in the lives of children. It is no surprise then, that children often disclose their experiences of sexual abuse to their camp leaders. When healthy relationships are formed, and a caring adult demonstrates a willingness to listen in a non-judgemental way, children are more likely to disclose.https://youtu.be/WoMTOzzcOXM
Children Still Need Camps in 2020
As the decision to close overnight camps this summer settles, camp staff are working hard to adjust to the circumstances and develop creative programs that fall within health and safety guidelines. From drive-thru camps to virtual camps to day camps, organizations are looking for ways to provide some kind of programming to youth this summer. For that, we thank you.At this time of year, Priority Kids is normally busy visiting summer camps to provide staff training. This year, our summer staff training looks different. This year we are offering online training followed by a virtual in depth and personalized discussion to help organizations apply child protection practices in your evolving programs. Because the need for training is as great as ever. Now, more than ever, kids need adults in their lives who will listen. Kids need adults in their lives who know what the signs of abuse are, and know how to respond to suspicions and disclosures. Are you running summer programs for youth in 2020? Have you considered how your new programs will continue to prevent child sexual abuse from occurring in your organization? Are your staff prepared to respond appropriately to children who may be experiencing child sexual abuse?
